BELFAST MURAL PROJECT    "The Pickle Jars"

In 1991 my design for a mural was painted by volunteers on the IGA market at the top of Main St. just above the Belfast Post Office.  The design was a case of jars.  The labels illustrated scenes of the city - public, personal, and  historic.  The arching labels were also a colorful and repetitive wave ascending the hill at the top of the city’s downtown.  The initial inspiration came from drawings of pickle jars I happened to be doing at the time.  I was looking at the combined image of the contents, the jar, and how the glass reflected its surroundings.  The mural became known as the “pickle jars”.  The box of jars was also a reflection of the contents of the building, a food market.  The mural was enjoyed for twenty years, but the paint was getting thin and it has recently been painted  over.
